Dialectical behavior therapy has four elements - mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is an effective treatment for high-risk, complex emotional and behavioral concerns. DBT combines methods from cognitive therapy (connecting thoughts, behaviors, and feelings), behavioral therapy (learned behaviors and how the environment impacts those behaviors), and aspects of mindfulness practices.

DBT GROUPS – A SKILLS-BASED TWENTY-FOUR WEEK TRAINING PROTOCOL

At Resource Group, we provide group skills-based training in a set of healthy coping skills to replace ineffective behaviors and manage intense emotions. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of borderline personality disorder, self-injury, suicidality, addiction, eating disorders, or other severe mood or anxiety concerns may benefit from DBT.

We offer three groups – Adult, Young Adult and Multifamily Skills groups.

Adult Group is for individuals 17 years of age and older. Young Adult (age 17 – 30) has a narrower age range for those individuals who wish to participate with their peers. Multifamily Skills Group is the adaptation of traditional DBT designed for adolescent clients (age 13 – 18) and their families. Clients attend Group with a parent or caregiver instead of alone so that both can learn DBT techniques and thus support each other’s growth.

All of the DBT Groups are skill development and training programs, where clients are taught skills in a class-like format, as opposed to process group, where clients would intimately share personal anecdotes about their life.

Each group lasts for 24 weeks. Participants have found they benefit from both group sessions, where they learn the skills, and individual therapy, where they can discuss the practice, and the success, of those skills with a clinician.

What happens during the DBT sessions?

Typically, sessions begin with a mindfulness exercise to center the participants and to help them focus on the work of the session itself. Then the group reviews the previous week’s “homework” assignment which will have been based on the skill learned the previous week.

A new skill is then introduced, with in-group practice. At the end of the session, new homework is assigned so that participants can practice and utilize that skill during the week.

Since opening in 1984, the Resource Group has become one of Baltimore’s leading providers of DBT – we are committed to helping you live a life worth living.

WHAT IS DBT?

DBT combines methods from cognitive therapy (connecting thoughts, behaviors, and feelings), behavioral therapy (learned behaviors and how the environment impacts those behaviors), and aspects of mindfulness practices.
