WHAT IS DBT?
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) combines methods from cognitive therapy (the connection of thoughts, behaviors, and feelings), behavioral therapy (learned behaviors and how the environment impacts those behaviors), and aspects of mindfulness practices.
Dialectics refers to the examination and discussion of opposing ideas in order to find the truth. DBT can help clients accept their uncomfortable thoughts, behaviors, and feelings as valid, while still recognizing those thoughts must be changed in order to live a better life.
Research shows that DBT can be a very effective treatment for:
persistent mood disorders
chronic suicidal thinking
The emotional problems we face often arise from unresolved past trauma that we carry locked away. During traumatic events, our brain tries to separate memories of trauma from normal, everyday brain processing. Because of this, similar circumstances or interactions can trigger the memory of trauma and lead to confusing and destructive emotional responses.
DBT helps clients learn about their triggers, so clients become more self-aware. Because of that self-awareness, clients begin to notice their undesired reactions and can refrain from unhealthy coping patterns. Eventually, the frequency and severity of self-destructive behaviors decreases: the motivation to change increases.
