“Finding the Joy in Being Magical”

Clinical Tools to Help Black Youth Foster Resilience and Emotional Well-Being

April 10, 2018 4:30 –7:45 pm

African American youth are at great risk for psychological distress which can lead to negative outcomes. Without awareness and culturally responsive support, Black children have the potential to join the growing numbers of African American adults who are three times more likely to report serious psychological difficulties and more likely to experience feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness.

Supporting Adolescents of Color will review research about mental health among African American youth. Participants will then explore factors related to risk and resilience for African American youth and learn what you need to know to provide the supports best suited for care, support, and resilience. A focus will be placed identifying mechanisms for supporting positive outcomes for Black youth.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will analyze empirical literature and data related to mental health disparities and considerations associated with the specific psychosocial stressors experienced by youth of color.
  • Participants will use group discussion to illustrate an understanding for cultural considerations that impact and interact with psychosocial factors associated with positive and negative outcomes for African American youth.
  • Participants will develop tools and practice clinical strategies related to providing therapeutic support and intervention to African American youth.
