Understanding Substance-Use Disorders in Teens

Loud, Dabs, and Handles gives clinicians, parents, and educators working with teens up-to-date information about the impact of substance use on social, emotional, neurological, and academic functioning. Participants will learn the language adolescents currently use to describe drugs, the behaviors related to substance use, and techniques for assessment, intervention, and long-term support.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the signs and symptoms of substance abuse in teens
  • Create a personalized action plan using the current research about drug use in adolescents
  • Discuss how and why substance abuse has increased among teenagers–with various negative effects
  • List which mood-altering drugs are most commonly abused by youth today and explain how these substances impact mental health
  • Design personalized tools for assessing, counseling, educating, and parenting substance-abusing youth

Katie McCabe, LCPC specializes in working with adolescents and young people with substance use disorders and has been an addictions counselor for 22 years. She served for 14 years as a member of the local Student Assistance Program, supporting students, teachers, and schools in managing substance use among youth in Baltimore County and surrounding areas.
